Primary Responsibilities

• Teach and mentor students in small class settings (3–12 students), adapting instruction to individual skill levels, creative interests, learning styles, and developmental needs.

• Deliver advanced instruction across a broad range of fine art disciplines, including drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, 3D design, installation art, and other contemporary art practices.

• Guide students in creating original, portfolio-quality artwork for AP Art, art and design schools, and college admissions.

• Mentor students through concept development, visual research, sketchbook practice, composition, storytelling, and professional presentation of artwork.

• Provide individualized portfolio reviews, constructive critiques, and strategic guidance throughout the college portfolio preparation process.

• Teach the thoughtful selection and application of materials while emphasizing color theory, composition, form, balance, texture, scale, symbolism, and spatial design.

• Foster creativity, critical thinking, experimentation, and artistic confidence in a supportive and engaging studio environment.

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom while modeling proper use and care of art materials, tools, and equipment.

• Collaborate with fellow instructors and leadership to support curriculum development, student progress, exhibitions, and special programs.

​Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of Fine Art teaching experience, preferably with middle school and high school students.

• Proven experience mentoring students through portfolio development and successful art school or college admissions is highly preferred.

• Strong foundation in traditional and contemporary fine arts, including drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, 3D design, and installation art.

• Experience teaching AP Studio Art is highly preferred; experience with AP 3D Art and Design is especially preferred.

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Fine Arts (BFA, MFA, or related discipline).

• Applicants with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and significant portfolio instruction experience will also be considered.

• Submission of a portfolio showcasing personal artwork and/or student portfolio outcomes.

• Excellent communication, classroom management, mentoring, and organizational skills.

• Availability to teach weekday evenings and weekends (Saturday and Sunday).

• Experience teaching students accepted into top art schools such as Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons School of

• Demonstrated success preparing students for admission to leading art and design schools such as Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Parsons School of Design, School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), ArtCenter College of Design, California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), and other competitive university art programs.

• Understanding of AP Art and Design courses, specifically 2D Design, AP Drawing, and AP 3D Art and Design.

• Ability to teach observational drawing, figure drawing, perspective, anatomy, color theory, conceptual development, and design principles.

• Experience with interdisciplinary and contemporary art practices.

• Experience preparing students for art competitions, exhibitions, scholarships, and juried shows.

• Strong understanding of portfolio sequencing, artist statements, interview preparation, and admissions expectations for top art schools.
