A Parent’s Guide to the OCSA Visual Arts Application & Placement Process

If your child is passionate about the visual arts and applying to the Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) for grades 7–12, congratulations! This is a thrilling step in their creative journey.

Because OCSA’s admissions process for the Visual Arts Conservatory involves specific requirements, deadlines, and technical steps, having a clear roadmap will help you support your child every step of the way.

🎨 Overview: What to Expect

The placement process is divided into two main parts:

1. Digital Submission (Online Portfolio): Three distinct artwork pieces created according to strict prompts, plus one continuous 20-minute video submission.

2. In-Person On-Campus Placement Session: A 90-minute on-campus session featuring a live drawing exercise, a small group interview, and a sketchbook review.

Part 1: Helping Your Child Prepare the Digital Portfolio

All applications require three specific artwork submissions. No additional or general portfolio pieces are accepted.

Guidelines & Expectations

Authenticity is Key: All artwork must be 100% created by the student. The use of AI, tracing, or outside help is strictly prohibited and will invalidate the application.

Time Commitment:

• Middle School Applicants (Grades 7–8): Plan for roughly 2 hours of work per prompt.

• High School Applicants (Grades 9–12): Plan for 3 to 4 hours of work per prompt.

File Types: Submit files only as PDF, PNG, or JPEG.

Tips for Recording Prompt #3 (The YouTube Video)

Prompt #3 requires a video recording of your child completing the drawing. Here is how to ensure it meets OCSA's guidelines:

Framing: Set up your camera/phone so that your child, their drawing paper, and the clear water glass/bottle are all simultaneously visible, well-lit, and in focus throughout the recording.

Timing: The video must be 20 minutes long at regular speed (do not speed up or edit the footage).

Face Shots:

1. Have your child start the video facing the camera.

2. Record the 20-minute drawing process.

3. At the end, have your child hold their finished drawing up next to their face and look directly into the camera.

Privacy: Upload the finished video to YouTube set as Unlisted (not Private or Public) so the panel can view it via the link. Copy and paste the link into the application form.

Part 2: The In-Person Campus Placement Activity

Once online applications are reviewed, students will be invited to a 90-minute small-group session at OCSA.

What Happens During the Visit?

1. Group Interview (~30 minutes): A relaxed, candid discussion with faculty.

2. Live Drawing Session (1 hour): A live still-life drawing prompt using traditional materials provided on site.

3. No Tech Allowed: Phones and electronic devices must be put away.

🎒 What to Bring: Your child must bring a physical sketchbook or notebook to show their artistic process. It does not need to be completely full, but it should showcase their effort, ideas, stories, sketches, and things that inspire them.

⚠️ Note on Skill Consistency: OCSA compares portfolio work against the live drawing session. If a significant skill gap is noticed, the in-person exercise will carry heavier weight in the rubric scoring. Encourage your child to rely strictly on their own abilities for the online portfolio!
